Here at Steeplejack, great beer isn’t just about what’s in the glass.
It’s about where it’s served and who you share it with. Our flagship brewery is housed in a landmark church building, originally built as the Church of Good Tidings in 1909. Over the last century, four different congregations have gathered in this space and called this building their home. Most recently, Metropolitan Community Church, dedicated to full inclusion with special outreach to LGBTQ+ communities, lovingly maintained the building throughout their stewardship until 2019. MCC also installed the main stained glass window, an AIDS Memorial design made by artist David Schlicker in 1989.
We had a vision to save the building from demolition and continue its legacy of community gathering. An extensive renovation project reused many of the building’s original elements, including restored wood and clerestory windows by David Schlicker that incorporate original Povey glass. Opening in 2021, Steeplejack is proud to serve the best quality ingredients and award-winning beers reverently in a space we love and treasure.
In 2023 we opened the doors to a second pub, SW Pizza & Beer in Southwest Portland. We also added a new production brewing space and pub in Hillsboro, expanding our brewing capacity and serving the community in Tualatin Valley. In 2025 we renovated a previous bank in Southeast Portland, collaborating with food carts and our sister company Harder Day Coffee to open the Union on Hawthorne.
We look forward to sharing a beer with you soon!
